About Me

Irene SmithI am short, barely 5' tall. In a crowd, I am often overlooked, both literally and figuratively. I knew that, in order to be heard, I needed to get the ultimate weapon. So I used my pen to open the world of ideas. For a while I tinkered as a non-fiction writer of technical prose but now the Holy Grail of Fiction beckons.

I discovered the magic of books when I was a little girl. It wasn't long before I wanted to write my own stories. It seemed like an appropriate way to give back something for all the pleasure I got from the stories I read. I started writing stories but I never showed them to anybody. The trouble was that whenever I compared my work to the work of the writers I loved and admired, my stuff came up wanting... to put it mildly.

Seemingly overnight, I was 25 years old and still hadn't written anything even close to good enough for publication. At least, that's what I thought. I vowed that if I hadn't been published by my 30th birthday, I would quit writing forever. I blinked my eyes a couple more times and I was 29 years old and still hadn't been published. In fact, despite my vows, I still hadn't sent anything out. At that point, I allowed myself to cheat. I wrote an article about computer programming and submitted it to a small magazine called, CodeWorks that specialized in articles about BASIC programming. Wonder of wonders, they bought it. They even paid me! That was in 1989. My first article was published nine months before my thirtieth birthday deadline.

Since that time I have been alternating between being a computer programmer and writing about computer programming for other programmers. I still talked about being a "real writer" but I never did anything to make it happen. Then, in July of 2003, everything changed. On Independence Day, my husband gave me a gift. He wrote a check to pay for my membership in the Romance Writers of America on the condition that I get serious about writing. I finished a couple of short stories I'd been playing around with for years. I sent them out. Then I started writing new stories and sending them out as well. By October, I had gotten a couple of really nice, personalized rejections. Wonder of wonders, I had two stories accepted as well.

See my publications page for details on where you can find my work.

I may still have to do other kinds of work from time to time to pay the bills but I'll never call myself anything but a writer from now on.
